Abstract

Mauritius is known for its ethnic, religious, cultural and linguistic diversity in a very small area. The linguistic functioning of this cohabitation has been discussed by linguists and other scientists from Mauritius and Europe on the occasion of an international conference on 12th and 13th of December 2019 at the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Vienna.

Author Biography

Elissa Pustka, Universität Wien

Elissa Pustka has studied phonetics, political sciences and journalism in Munich and Paris and has received a binational doctoral degree and a habilitation in Romance Philology. Since 2014, she is a professor for Romance Linguistics and Communication Sciences at the University of Vienna. Her main research interests lie in phonology, semantics/pragmatics, linguistics of varieties, media linguistics and contact linguistics. She is particularly interested in French-based creoles and their contact with French, broadening her scope from Guadeloupe to Martinique and Mauritius.
