This article focuses on an exemplary analysis of a French comic about poetry. The title of the album Alexandrin ou L’art de faire des vers à pied (2017) by Pascal Rabaté and Alain Kokor already hints at the poetic content of the work. The comic tells of the life of the amateur poet Alexandrin, who seems to have fallen out of time in several respects. In keeping with the stereotype of the ‘poor poet’, he peddles his verses to keep his head above water. His telling name refers to writing poetry in twelve syllables, which has gone completely out of fashion. By means of graphic anthropomorphising, the autoreferential pun of the title itself takes shape and initiates a playful reflexion on the contemporary meaning of poetry, whereby the irreplaceable value of poetry is in turn poetically expressed by using rhetorical stylistic devices in an entertaining interplay, sometimes linguistically, sometimes graphically.
