• The CLARe7 call for papers has arrived

  2025-06-27

  The 7th Conference on Corpora for Language and Aging Research (CLARe7) invites submissions under the theme Negotiating Age-Related Changes.

  Contributions are welcome from corpus linguistics, multimodal communication, discourse studies, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and applied linguistics, including emerging AI tools. The conference seeks to advance dialogue on how language use changes in later life and how linguistic, cognitive, and interactional challenges related to aging are managed across diverse communicative settings.

  We welcome proposals for presentations and posters dealing with issues related to language and aging. The deadline for abstracts is 30 September 2025, and the conference will be held 13–15 May 2026 at Tongji University in Shanghai, China, in a hybrid in-person/online format.

• The first issue of 2025 is now available

  There is a new issue of the Journal of Language and Aging Research (vol. 3, no. 1) online!

  This issue includes a scoping review of speech accommodations for older adults and a study of the interactions of age and gender with the perception of aging voices, alongside a corpus presentation, a book announcement, and an editorial.

• A new journal issue, and a new journal section

  A new issue of the Journal of Language and Aging Research (vol. 2, no. 2) has been published!

  Alongside the research articles that usually appear in the journal, with this issue a new section has been introduced: corpus presentations. These brief articles are included in the interest of Open Science, as a way to let those in the field of Language and Aging Research know about the sorts of corpora that other researchers have developed, and to provide information on how researchers might be able to use them in their own work.

  We are happy to announce the publication of the newest issue of the Journal of Language and Aging Research (vol. 2, no. 1).

  This issue includes three articles dealing with important topics at the intersection of aging and language:

  • Dementia stigma: representation and language use (Emma Putland & Gavin Brookes)
  • A study of the semantic preference and semantic prosody associated with the denominations of aging people (Denis Jamet & Christophe Coupé)
  • Morphological processing across the adult lifespan: a tale of gains and losses (Jana Reifegerste)

• Sixth Conference on Language & Aging Research (CLARe6) call for papers

  CLARe6 will be held 10–12 April 2024 in Tübingen, Germany. Submissions are being accepted through 1 November 2023, and the call for papers and submission form are available at this page.

  The CLARe conferences are dedicated to bringing researchers together who are interested in language and aging research. Their aim is to promote an integrated, cross-disciplinary approach to language use in later life across the fields of psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, pragmatics, psychology, sociology, as well as healthcare, nursing, and in particular with older speakers.

• A new journal for an emerging field

  We are pleased to announce that the first issue of the Journal of Language and Aging Research has been published.

  This issue contains research papers answering important questions about the intersection of language and aging:

  • What is the role of humor in the linguistic production of multilingual individuals experiencing dementia? (Carolin Schneider & Besa Qalaj)

  • How can we use ERP data to model syntactic processing in older adults? (Willem van Boxtel & Laurel A. Lawyer)

  It also includes a number of brief “mission statements” by experts from various subdisciplines of linguistics on fruitful future directions for research in language and aging.

• Oh my, don’t talk about aging! — Journal of Language and Aging Research open for submissions

  What one of our participants said (in French: “ah là là, parlez pas de vieillir,” Ms. Moreau, 85 years old) holds for much of linguistic research: topics addressing the relation of old age and language receive little attention.

  The newly founded open-access Journal of Language and Aging Research is the first journal to deal with the intersection of two things that are part of our constant, everyday experience: language and aging.

  Our website is online, and the first issue will be published in the spring of 2023. Starting now, we are open for submissions!
