The Journal of Alevi Studies (JAS) is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to the study of Alevism in its historical and contemporary manifestations. It provides a forum for original research, critical debate, and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of Alevism and Alevi communities across diverse contexts.
Recognising Alevism as a complex and multifaceted field of study, JAS welcomes contributions from a broad range of disciplines and adopts an inclusive understanding of Alevi Studies that encompasses related traditions and communities. The journal seeks to foster international scholarly exchange, encourage theoretical and methodological innovation, and contribute to the further development of Alevi Studies as a distinct yet interdisciplinary field of research. The journal is edited by an international and interdisciplinary editorial team that reflects the broad disciplinary profile of the journal.
Established in 2026, JAS is published by Hamburg University Press and funded by the Institute of Alevi Theology at the University of Hamburg. Through its open-access publishing model, the journal enhances the global accessibility and visibility of research.
The journal publishes articles in English, German, and Turkish and appears annually. In addition to research articles, the journal also welcomes book reviews, review articles, conference reports, scholarly interviews and proposals for thematic special issues.
Call for Paper
JAS invites submissions for its first issue. We welcome original articles from all relevant disciplines that contribute to the study of Alevism and related traditions. Contributions are accepted in English, German, and Turkish and will undergo double-blind peer review. Further information is available under Call for Papers.
