Call for Papers

The Journal of Alevi Studies (JAS) invites submissions for its first annual volume, which will begin publication in 2027. The journal provides an international and interdisciplinary platform for original scholarship on Alevism in its historical, religious, social, cultural, political and diasporic diversity and contributes to the further development of Alevi Studies as a distinct yet interdisciplinary field of research.

Scope

JAS welcomes theoretically informed and empirically grounded contributions on Alevism and Alevi communities and related traditions in different historical, geographical and transnational contexts.
Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Alevi history, theology and religious traditions
  • Ritual, belief, religious authority and everyday practice
  • Sacred places, objects, manuscripts and material religion
  • Migration, diaspora and transnational communities
  • Music, literature, oral traditions and performance
  • Identity, recognition, citizenship and political mobilisation
  • Gender, generation, youth and family
  • Memory, trauma, violence and commemoration
  • Media, visual culture and digital knowledge production
  • Heritage, archives, museums and cultural transmission
  • Relations between Alevism and connected religious, cultural and historical tradition

The journal particularly encourages interdisciplinary work. Submissions on related communities and traditions are welcome where they fall within the broader scope of Alevi Studies.

Types of Contributions

The journal primarily welcomes original research articles. It is also open to:

  • Book reviews
  • Review articles
  • Conference reports
  • Scholarly interviews

Languages

Submissions are accepted in English, German and Turkish. The journal’s multilingual publication policy aims to strengthen dialogue between different academic traditions and make research on Alevism accessible to a broader international readership.

Continuous Publication

Beginning in 2027, JAS will follow a continuous publication model. Articles that successfully complete peer review and production will be published online individually as soon as they are ready.

Special Issues

The journal also welcomes proposals for special issues on clearly defined themes related to Alevism and Alevi Studies. Special issue proposals may be submitted throughout the year. Researchers interested in guest-editing a special issue are invited to contact the editorial team with an outline of the topic, its scholarly relevance and its potential contribution to the field.

Diamond Open Access

JAS is a fully open access journal. There are:

  • No submission fees
  • No article processing charges
  • No publication fees

All published content will be freely accessible to readers worldwide.
