Bǝsṭawros was one of the famous abbots of Däbrä Ḥayq. He passed away at Gondär during the time of Iyasu II (1730-1755 A.D.) and his relics were taken to Däbrä Ḥayq some years after his death (Raineri 2003:549). He copied and caused to copy several manuscripts (for instance EMMLs nos. 1836, 2059, 2060 etc.) and donated to different churches. His Gädl is the primary source for his biography and was composed at 1894 A.D. The Gädl has various important aspects. It deals with various historical events and discusses theological controversies that took place in Ethiopia. This article is intended to present an edition and translation of Gädlä Bǝsṭawros.

Resistance
This article examines how Emperor Ḫaylä Śǝllase I succeeded in removing the British military occupation of Ethiopia during World War II with only a minimum of bloodshed. It outlines the various strategies and tactics the Emperor of Ethiopia employed to regain control over his empire. The text also asserts that he engaged in a pre-Cold War variant of the policy of flexible response which permitted him to resist British military rule without provoking a violent response from his occupier. The text highlights a handful of the numerous tactics and strategies which were employed by indigenous leaders and their allies not only in Africa but also throughout the developing world to successfully resist European colonial rule during and after World War II.

Sounds of Gǝʿǝz – How to Study the Phonetics and Phonology of an Ancient Language

Linguistics

Ge'ez
The phonology belongs to the basic structures of a language. Knowing the sounds of the phonemes of a language is essential for the grammar, etymology or classification of a given language. For ancient languages (extinct or classical), phonology is always problematic, for obvious reasons. In this paper, various approaches are evaluated and combined that can shed light on how Gəʿəz might have sounded in Aksumite times: transcriptions in contemporary language, transcriptions and loanwords from contemporary languages, traditional pronunciation, the phonology of the daughter languages, and comparative evidence.

[Wal.: The Gǝʿǝz syntax of the Sälamat, short poems which were added to the text of the Synaxarium at a later date, shows features that are known from modern Ethiosemitic lan-guages, especially Amharic. This applies in particular to the preposing of the adjective and the genitive within the noun phrase, the final position of the verb in the matrix as well as the dependent clause, the fronting of dependent clauses before their matrix clause and the occasional use of circumpositions. In addition, as a specific poetic feature, the use of the feminine relative marker instead of the masculine is briefly demonstrated. The late Alexander Sima discusses all these phenomena and presents numerous examples from the Sälamat.]

Das Ablautsystem des B- und D-Typs im Harari und Ostgurage

Ablaut System
The verbal system of the East Gurage-Harari-Group inside the southern Ethio-Semitic languages, underwent a special development: The lengthening of the second consonant, the characteristic feature of B-type verbs in the other Semitic languages, totally got lost. The consequence was, that the palatal vowel, which we find already in the Gǝʿǝz imperfect yǝfeṣṣǝm, became the only characteristic of the B-type. It spread over all three verbal forms (perfect, imperfect, jussive) and formed a system of ablaut between ē and ī (and in analogy to that, between ō and ū in the D-type). This however, happened in different ways in the three languages: Silṭe, Harari und Zāy. The article tries to explain how the ablaut systems of the three languages came into being.

Nominal Number Marking in Wolane

Linguistics

Nominal Number Making
Countable common nouns in the East Gurage language Wolane are usually unmarked for number and belong to one of three noun classes based on the inherent gender feature of the nouns. First, it will be argued that morphological plural marking indicates plurality and specificity. Second, it will be shown that the interaction between the three noun classes and definiteness has various pragmatic effects. Finally, the findings for Wolane are compared with related East Gurage languages.

Ein amharischer Atlas aus Malta

Malta
In August 2008 Professor Dr. Hans H. Kaminsky of the Institute of History of the University of Giessen, gave me an Amharic atlas, printed in Malta, which he had bought several years ago, at the Giessen flee-market. The atlas is now in the possession of the Hiob Ludolf Zentrum für Äthiopistik of the Asien-Afrika-Institut, Universität Hamburg. The article places the atlas into the historical context of the educational efforts of German protestant missionaries who worked under the auspices of the Church Missionary Society in Ethiopia, during the first half of the 19th century. It also sheds light on the Society’s printing activities in Malta.

A Psalter from Tübingen: Although Inconspicuous the Text, Neverthless a Treasure for Manuscriptology
Six, Veronika
Manuscripts
History
Bible
Psalter
Mäzmurä Dawit
The University Library of Tübingen, Germany, has acquired a manuscript with the text of a Mäzmurä Dawit. The manuscript is dated. At first glance it seems to be the standard Psalter. But there are several criteria, which give insight into the manuscript culture, and which has not changed during centuries. The modern printed editions of a Mäzmurä Dawit exactly follow the scheme of the long tradition. Besides being a perfect witness to the traditional manuscript culture and individual use of a Mäzmurä Dawit, the Tübingen manuscript contains elements, which open the window to different aspects, as for example, worship and belief, iconography, or history.

Gädlä Marqos
Apocrypha
The apocryphal Acts of Mark (Gädlä Marqos) were translated from Greek in Ethiopic in the last years of the reign of ʿEzana, between 360 and 370. They are transmitted only by two manuscripts: EMML 1763, ff. 224–227 (=A), dated 1336/37 or 1339/40 and pub-lished by Getatchew Haile, “A new Ethiopic version of the Acts of St. Mark (EMML 1763, ff. 224r–227r)”, Analecta Bollandiana, 99, 1981, pp. 117–134; and Pistoia, Biblioteca Forteguerriana, ms. Martini etiop. n. 5 (= Zanutto n. 2), ff. 82–89 (= B), 18th–19th cent., recently discovered (G.L., “I codici etiopici del Fondo Martini nella Biblioteca Forte-guerriana di Pistoia”, Aethiopica, V, 2002, pp. 156–176, pp. 171–175). A new critical edition of the text of Gädlä Marqos is given here, together with a study of the Christian Ethiopian literature of the Axumite age.

Abraha the Abyssinian in Islamic tradition

Abraha
Mecca
Abraha, the Abyssinian ruler of Yemen, who dared to attack Mecca in an attempt to demolish the sacred Kaʿba, is well known in Muslim historical traditions about pre-Islamic Arabia (Sīra and ḥadīṯ). The article presents a collection of the most significant Islamic texts related to Abraha and his military adventure. The author explains how the image of the Ethiopian army commander was blended into the traditional Islamic eschatological personage of the Abyssinian “with the two small shanks” who will destroy the sanctuary of Mecca before the end of the world. Moreover, the descriptions of the characteristics of these two individuals are analyzed in detail to highlight the fact that there is a clear difference between the report of Abraha’s actions in the more historically oriented sources (Sīra) and the harsh judgment against him in the definitely more religiously marked prophetic sayings (ḥadīṯ). ATTENTION: Due to copy-right no online publication is provided.

Land Politics in the Ethiopian-Eritrean Border Area between Emperor Yoḥannǝs IV and Mǝnilǝk II

Colonial Reports
The complex issue of the land tenure system in 19th and 20th century Ethiopia–Eritrea has a tridimensional aspect that constitutes the basis of my reflection here: the native conception of land, the imperial Ethiopian policy and the colonial intervention. A correct evaluation of this interrelation can be properly understood by focusing on a corpus of integrated sources related to local written documentation, oral records and colonial reports. The control of the northern border by Emperors Yoḥannǝs and Mǝnilǝk created various historical problems and a debate focusing on independence and the maintenance of a political autonomy of the Märäb Mǝllaš. Land tenure system is the key factor for understanding the dynamic of power relations in the area at the eve of colonial rule.

Football
This paper presents the apparition of modern sport in Ethiopia: in the schools, the military institutions and, as far as football is concerned, in clubs. The foundation of the first local football teams coincides with the raise of the first expressions of an Ethiopian national feeling on the occasion of confrontations against “foreign”, and later Erytrean, teams. After World War II, and through the action of Ydneqatchew Tessema, the first sport institutions of the country are founded. Athletics, which is not yet the vector of the Ethiopian sport nationalism, grows mostly after 1947 with the help of the Swedes. Yet, among the Ethiopian sports of that period, athletics remains in the backstage, restricted to the schools grounds and the military barracks. In accordance with the opinions of the time on the aptitudes of Black people, Ethiopian athletics concentrate then on sprint, and not on long distance races.

The close relationship between Harari and the East Gurage languages Silṭe, Wolane and Zāy was established already in 1931 by Marcel Cohen, and then confirmed by Wolf Leslau, Robert Hetzron and others. The present article will elaborate this relationship on the basis of the new material on the Eastern Gurage languages presented by Wolf Leslau, Ernst-August Gutt and Ronny Meyer in the last decades. Phonological, lexical, morphological and syntactical phenomena are considered in the course of which special emphasis is laid on the chronology of the separation of the different languages.

Eine weitere arabische Inschrift von der osttigrayischen Handelsroute: Hinweis auf eine muslimische Kultstätte in der "dunklen Periode"?
History
Islam
Inscription
Arabic
Religion
This article discusses a fragmented Arabic inscription, which is kept in the rock-hewn church of Č̣ärqos Wǝq̠ro in eastern Tǝgray. The text could be read as one of the 99 names of God or an invocation of God. A stylistic comparison with Arabic inscriptions of eastern Tǝgray, Dahlak and other areas suggests that it was not produced locally, but rather imported, and dates to the 9th to 10th century approximately. It is thus one of the earliest witnesses for the presence of Muslims in Tǝgray in the “dark period” after the decline of Aksum. Style and content show that the inscription did not belong to a funeral complex, but rather to a place of worship. Its location points to a connection with nearby Nägaš, where Muslims revere the holy grave of the naǧāšī of the Ḥadīṯ, and which is located on the same route as Wǝq̠ro connecting the area with the Red Sea.

This article will look at Abu Rumi’s Amharic rendering of the Book of Ruth with close comparison to the ancient and modern versions of the Bible, especially the Gǝ’ǝz, the Masoretic and the Septuaginta texts. The article will also look at the extent of Abu Rumi’s close reading of the Hebrew text and the degree to which he successfully transmits to us the full impact of the Hebrew story with all its niceties.

Verbless Relative Clauses in Gǝʿǝz and their Equivalents in Amharic and Tigrinya
Kapeliuk, Olga
Linguistics
Amharic
Ge'ez
Relative Clause
The most frequent and most typical relative clauses in Gǝʿǝz have a verbal predicate, but also nominal, or in other terms verbless, sentences may be relativized. Since Gǝʿǝz has no copula, nominal sentences are composed of the subject and of the predicative complement of a zero copula only. Considering that in sentences with relative clauses the headnoun stands outside the relative clause, all that is left in the latter is the relative pronoun and what acts as the predicative complement. Hence the nominal relative clauses have a much reduced structure and may be interpreted wrongly as one-member sentences.

A Short Note about some Useful Documents for Diachronical Studies of Non-Semitic Ethiopian Languages

Bibliothèque Nationale
The collection of manuscripts preserved in the Oriental Manuscripts Department of the French Bibliothèque nationale contains documents about some thirty non-semitic languages spoken in Ethiopia which belong mainly to the d’Abbadie collection. Their exceptional age (they date back to the mid-19th century) gives them an incomparable historical value. I try in this short note to assess the use which has already been made of these documents by éthiopisants and to draw up the list of those which have not yet been used.

Aufstockung des äthiopischen Handschriftenbestandes zweier deutscher Bibliotheken

Senkessar
Hymns
Psalter
Mäzmurä Dawit
Two German libraries which hold collections of Oriental manuscripts again have enlarged their stock of Ethiopian manuscripts. The Berlin State Library: there is a dated Sǝnkǝssar representing the still living manuscript tradition. Without concrete dating (which exists) a cataloguer surely might come to a wrong judgment concerning the date of writing the manuscript, but the date is clear: 20th cent. The second manuscript is a gift from Professor Dr. Walter W. Müller (Marburg): the unbound parchment leaves contain chronicles in Amharic concerning the history of Ethiopia and Šäwa written in the second half of the 19th cent. Then a collection of Hymns (Sälam), a Psalter and a small manuscript containing a text which is used as protection of the soul either during funeral rites or – as it is the case here – as a separate text serving the daily protection of a human being. The second library: the University Library Tübingen with a long tradition of collecting Oriental and Ethiopic manuscripts as well, now has acquired two manuscripts: a dated Mäzmurä Dawit of the second half of the 19th cent. which also represents the manuscript tradition at its best and a parchment scroll containing prayers for protecting a female person, but in which the originally restricted purpose has been changed into a general protective function.
