Bǝsṭawros was one of the famous abbots of Däbrä Ḥayq. He passed away at Gondär during the time of Iyasu II (1730-1755 A.D.) and his relics were taken to Däbrä Ḥayq some years after his death (Raineri 2003:549). He copied and caused to copy several manuscripts (for instance EMMLs nos. 1836, 2059, 2060 etc.) and donated to different churches. His Gädl is the primary source for his biography and was composed at 1894 A.D. The Gädl has various important aspects. It deals with various historical events and discusses theological controversies that took place in Ethiopia. This article is intended to present an edition and translation of Gädlä Bǝsṭawros.

This article examines how Emperor Ḫaylä Śǝllase I succeeded in removing the British military occupation of Ethiopia during World War II with only a minimum of bloodshed. It outlines the various strategies and tactics the Emperor of Ethiopia employed to regain control over his empire. The text also asserts that he engaged in a pre-Cold War variant of the policy of flexible response which permitted him to resist British military rule without provoking a violent response from his occupier. The text highlights a handful of the numerous tactics and strategies which were employed by indigenous leaders and their allies not only in Africa but also throughout the developing world to successfully resist European colonial rule during and after World War II.

The phonology belongs to the basic structures of a language. Knowing the sounds of the phonemes of a language is essential for the grammar, etymology or classification of a given language. For ancient languages (extinct or classical), phonology is always problematic, for obvious reasons. In this paper, various approaches are evaluated and combined that can shed light on how Gəʿəz might have sounded in Aksumite times: transcriptions in contemporary language, transcriptions and loanwords from contemporary languages, traditional pronunciation, the phonology of the daughter languages, and comparative evidence.

[Wal.: The Gǝʿǝz syntax of the Sälamat, short poems which were added to the text of the Synaxarium at a later date, shows features that are known from modern Ethiosemitic lan-guages, especially Amharic. This applies in particular to the preposing of the adjective and the genitive within the noun phrase, the final position of the verb in the matrix as well as the dependent clause, the fronting of dependent clauses before their matrix clause and the occasional use of circumpositions. In addition, as a specific poetic feature, the use of the feminine relative marker instead of the masculine is briefly demonstrated. The late Alexander Sima discusses all these phenomena and presents numerous examples from the Sälamat.]

Ablaut System

The verbal system of the East Gurage-Harari-Group inside the southern Ethio-Semitic languages, underwent a special development: The lengthening of the second consonant, the characteristic feature of B-type verbs in the other Semitic languages, totally got lost. The consequence was, that the palatal vowel, which we find already in the Gǝʿǝz imperfect yǝfeṣṣǝm, became the only characteristic of the B-type. It spread over all three verbal forms (perfect, imperfect, jussive) and formed a system of ablaut between ē and ī (and in analogy to that, between ō and ū in the D-type). This however, happened in different ways in the three languages: Silṭe, Harari und Zāy. The article tries to explain how the ablaut systems of the three languages came into being.

Countable common nouns in the East Gurage language Wolane are usually unmarked for number and belong to one of three noun classes based on the inherent gender feature of the nouns. First, it will be argued that morphological plural marking indicates plurality and specificity. Second, it will be shown that the interaction between the three noun classes and definiteness has various pragmatic effects. Finally, the findings for Wolane are compared with related East Gurage languages.

In August 2008 Professor Dr. Hans H. Kaminsky of the Institute of History of the University of Giessen, gave me an Amharic atlas, printed in Malta, which he had bought several years ago, at the Giessen flee-market. The atlas is now in the possession of the Hiob Ludolf Zentrum für Äthiopistik of the Asien-Afrika-Institut, Universität Hamburg. The article places the atlas into the historical context of the educational efforts of German protestant missionaries who worked under the auspices of the Church Missionary Society in Ethiopia, during the first half of the 19th century. It also sheds light on the Society’s printing activities in Malta.

The University Library of Tübingen, Germany, has acquired a manuscript with the text of a Mäzmurä Dawit. The manuscript is dated. At first glance it seems to be the standard Psalter. But there are several criteria, which give insight into the manuscript culture, and which has not changed during centuries. The modern printed editions of a Mäzmurä Dawit exactly follow the scheme of the long tradition. Besides being a perfect witness to the traditional manuscript culture and individual use of a Mäzmurä Dawit, the Tübingen manuscript contains elements, which open the window to different aspects, as for example, worship and belief, iconography, or history.
