Bǝsṭawros was one of the famous abbots of Däbrä Ḥayq. He passed away at Gondär during the time of Iyasu II (1730-1755 A.D.) and his relics were taken to Däbrä Ḥayq some years after his death (Raineri 2003:549). He copied and caused to copy several manuscripts (for instance EMMLs nos. 1836, 2059, 2060 etc.) and donated to different churches. His Gädl is the primary source for his biography and was composed at 1894 A.D. The Gädl has various important aspects. It deals with various historical events and discusses theological controversies that took place in Ethiopia. This article is intended to present an edition and translation of Gädlä Bǝsṭawros.

The University Library of Tübingen, Germany, has acquired a manuscript with the text of a Mäzmurä Dawit. The manuscript is dated. At first glance it seems to be the standard Psalter. But there are several criteria, which give insight into the manuscript culture, and which has not changed during centuries. The modern printed editions of a Mäzmurä Dawit exactly follow the scheme of the long tradition. Besides being a perfect witness to the traditional manuscript culture and individual use of a Mäzmurä Dawit, the Tübingen manuscript contains elements, which open the window to different aspects, as for example, worship and belief, iconography, or history.

The fall in 1955 of Tsähafé Teʾezaz Wäldä-Giyorgis Wäldä-Yohannes was an event of special importance in the political history of imperial Ethiopia. For nearly a decade and a half after 1941, Wäldä-Giyorgis had exercised power and influence second only to that of Emperor Haylä-Sellasé. Yet, this very power and influence seems to have contributed to his undoing. Those who were shunted aside or feared his growing powers joined forces to estrange him from the emperor and bring about his downfall. The document printed here provides a personal account of the central character, Wäldä-Giyorgis himself, on the buildup to the final moment in May 1955, when he was removed from his powerful position to that of a provincial governor. It underscores the central role played in that downfall by his erstwhile ally, Mäkonnen Habtä-Wäld, as well as the attempt of Church authorities to mediate between the emperor and the powerful minister. Above all, the document gives us a rare insight into the relationship between emperor and minister and the trauma that the breach represented to both. Further, the outward decorum and civility that pervaded the entire proceedings of what must have been a grave political crisis provides a striking contrast to the brusqueness, not to say brutality, with which political opponents – real or imagined – were disposed of in post-1974 Ethiopia.

Though Eduard Zander’s original sketchbook with drawings in pen and ink – showing the remote Simen Mountain area – is still preserved in London, his adventuresome life and his scientific and artistic work as a biologist, architect or artisan is scarcely known in 19th century Ethiopian history. In the present article the author makes an attempt at Zander’s biography, adding the missing links and correcting the errors of his few predecessors; furthermore, he tries to produce recently dicovered source-material in an updated form.

An analysis of the Ustinov-Hall family networks in respect to Ethiopia shows a surprisingly intense involvement of family members in Ethiopian history, beginning with a German immigrant to Ethiopia during the zämänä mäsafǝnt until the late Ḫaylä Śǝllase’s government. In this article not only the factual involvement of family members is documented. Even more important, the impact of inter-cultural, inter-national origins on the creation of a genealogically based network of individuals ready to serve as cultural “bridges”, or better: practical intermediaries between two cultural spheres, is illustrated with these examples. The reconstruction of the genealogical origins of the family-network in a Šäwan (leading?) family gives occasion for the discussion and clarification of transliteration problems, traditions of name-giving and traditions of (originally oral) genealogical historiography.

The article aims at giving some information about Ethiopian Muslim scholars of the past century, so to enhance our general knowledge of Ethiopian Islam, and, moreover, to contribute to a better prosopographical understanding of the Muslim presence in Ethiopia. In this endeavour, it explores the data scattered in Ethiopian Islamic periodical press, which flourished in that country after the fall of the Derg regime in 1991. In particular, the monthly magazine Bilal, which contains in almost every issue a biographical note devoted to some learned man of the recent past, is used to collect material on the scholars. Biographical articles in Amharic and Arabic which appeared in the magazine are summarized and commented upon.

It seems possible to isolate a group of saints born in Egypt (or living there for a long time), different from the traditional saints of that country mainly because they were not martyrs, and substituted the martyrdom by penances and absolute asceticism; the presence of the desert is much more pronounced than in the rest of Abyssinian hagiography, and nearly absolute; the activity of the devil is also very heavily marked; almost all of them are of “Roman” birth or connection. They are Bula/Abib, Gabra Krestos/Alexius, Latṣun, Nob, Gabra Manfas Qeddus, John the Oriental, maybe Tadēwos of Dabra Bartarwa, Yoḥanni of Däbrä ʿAśa, and some others, to which the “Aksumite” saints must be added. The relationship of these saints among themselves is also demonstrated by the codices, in which the “Life” or the hymnography pertaining to one or more of them occur together with those of some of the others, in different combinations.

Yaʿqob of Sǝrug, one of the most important Syrian church writers of the 6th century, wrote more than 750 metrical works. Many of them are translated into Arabic, and this version was the Vorlage for the Ethiopian translator. About 20 of Yaʿqob’s homilies are representes in the the Ethiopic tradition, and most of them deal with christological-mariological themes. The Dǝrsan for the fourth Sunday of Taḫśaś is edited and translatedd on the basis of six Gǝʿǝz manuscripts. The contents concern the annunciation of the incarnation to the Virgin Mary.

Sylvain Grébaut (1881–1955) devoted his life to Ethiopian studies. He collected Ethiopic Mss. for the Vatican Library, taught Ethiopic at the Catholic University of Paris, described a considerable number of Mss., edited and translated religious texts, and accumulated day by day a variety of lexical information, in order to complete Dillmann’s Lexicon. This made him realise the usefulness of a scholarly journal to preserve all this knowledge. He attained only partial success, with great effort and labour. This article contains parts of the gadl of Sylvain Grébaut, which reminds one of the story of S. Yared and the caterpillar.

As the random samples in the preceding notes show, publications of various kinds and qualities have been continuously produced (albeit obvious financial, political and technical difficulties) in Ethiopia and Eritrea in Amharic, English, Gǝʿǝz, and Tǝgrǝñña throughout the decades of this century, and particularly in the present one. In the field of history, which has been taken as a point of focus in this article, conspicuous progress seems to have been made in the last half a dozen or so years as a result of the enhancement of historical consciousness promoted partly through education and partly through the prevailing political circumstances which awakened many, at least in the case of Ethiopia, to the uncertainties that have been looming up on the horizon. In the case of Eritrea, the primary drive seems to have been the search for identity and self-assertion following the attainment of sovereignty. Another factor is the rise of a relatively vast and rapacious readership in both countries evolving from the educational efforts of the last half of a century and the general literacy campaign which accompanied formal schooling. Furthermore, there has been a marked expansion of printing facilities, bookshops and libraries, as well as some pioneering publishing houses – all of which might have provided an impetus in their own way. The production of some works critical of the contemporary government may also reflect the existence of a relative relaxation in censorship, at least in the early years of the decade, a unique situation which was unthinkable under the monarchy and the Marxist regime. Two significant aspects of the recent production of historical works in Ethiopia and Eritrea have been the marked improvement in quality as well as the increase in thematic variety. Episodic, epochal, biographical and autobiographical studies are prevailing over the traditional tendency of commencing history with Adam and Eve. Likewise, the narrative and/or collective method of history is gradually giving way to the interpretive, but not at the expense of source materials which are also being sought, collected and published. Most of the works have a touch of originality, as they incorporate, consciously or otherwise, materials derived from oral traditions and personal observations of the authors. It is, therefore, time for scholars, reviewers, bibliographers and librarians outside those countries to take these works seriously into account.

In all likelihood it was the German missionary Johann Ludwig Krapf who commissioned a manuscript with hagiographic texts about King Lālibalā in the first decade of the nineteenth century, in Šawā. This manuscript was eventually used by August Dillmann for his Lexicon linguae aethiopicae published in 1865. More than eighty years later, the manuscript was catalogued by Enrico Cerulli in 1946 and was later lost somewhere on one of the numerous shelves of the collection of the India Office. It has recently been traced and is now to be found in the British Library under the shelf mark Ms Ethiopic 4.

The Muslim scholars of Wällo are known for composing panegyrics that are usually chanted on special occasions or gatherings like ḥaḍra and Mawlid (festival to solemnize the birthday of the Prophet). The Ramsa is a very famous collection of poems made up of three Arabic litanies: the first two of them were composed by šayḫ Aḥmad Ādam (d. 1903) the founder of Dana, centre of Islamic learning and mysticism located in Yäǧǧu province, northeastern Wällo. The third one is by šayḫ Ibrāhīm Č̣ale (d. 1958). This paper is a preliminary attempt to introduce the first of the three invocational poems composing the Ramsa to the academic world, to give a first impression of the level of Arabic proficiency of local Ethiopian scholars and to discuss the message the text contains as part of a spiritual culture practiced and cherished for at least a century by both the Muslim intelligentsia and the laity. Some codicological information about one of the manuscripts which preserve these texts is also given.

This article deals with Sufism in Ethiopia, how people came to affiliate themselves to certain Ṣūfī orders and how the ṭarīqa, or Ṣūfī order, underwent change in providing alternative ways for Muslims to follow their career under the present regime. The first part of this article will show how Islam was introduced into the region, i.e. in and around Ǧimma Zone, and how the royal family was instrumental in the Islamization process. The role of the royal family in the Islamization process is central to understanding why Tiǧāniyya, the most popular Ṣūfī order in the region, became widespread in the region. The second part deals with the careers and life histories of some Tiǧānī masters, widely known in the region. The careers of these masters reveal that personal connections and networks extended both nationwide and abroad. The third part places Tiǧāniyya in the politics of religion under the present regime. The 2006 incident in which Muslim radicals attacking Orthodox Christians in the region revealed that the Christian community was not unaffected by internal Muslim strife. Thereafter, the government chose to support one Muslim wing against the other. Affiliation to ṭarīqa is becoming a political stance and, in recent years, Tiǧāniyya, the most visible ṭarīqa in and around Ǧimma, is increasingly being co-opted by the present regime.

During the course of a study of the manuscript tradition of the Betä Ǝsraʾel (Ethiopian Jews), the manuscript Jerusalem, National Library, Ms. Or. 87 came to light. This codex is a unique manuscript with several important elements that contribute to our knowledge of the history of the Betä Ǝsraʾel. Its by far most important feature are two short additional notes that I have come to call the Hoḫwärwa genealogy. This genealogy is the second piece of original pre-twentieth century Betä Ǝsraʾel historiography ever discovered, next to the text published by Leslau in 1946-47 as ‘A Falasha Religious Dispute.’ Taking the manuscript as a starting point, this article aims to cover topics such as the Betä Ǝsraʾel scribal tradition and aspects of their literature, their monasticism, the history of Hoḫwärwa monastery, and the history of the manuscript itself.

fr_FR
