Land Politics in the Ethiopian-Eritrean Border Area between Emperor Yoḥannǝs IV and Mǝnilǝk II

The complex issue of the land tenure system in 19th and 20th century Ethiopia–Eritrea has a tridimensional aspect that constitutes the basis of my reflection here: the native conception of land, the imperial Ethiopian policy and the colonial intervention. A correct evaluation of this interrelation can be properly understood by focusing on a corpus of integrated sources related to local written documentation, oral records and colonial reports. The control of the northern border by Emperors Yoḥannǝs and Mǝnilǝk created various historical problems and a debate focusing on independence and the maintenance of a political autonomy of the Märäb Mǝllaš. Land tenure system is the key factor for understanding the dynamic of power relations in the area at the eve of colonial rule.

Karl Polanyi
The article considers Karl Polanyi’s thesis that 19th century Western capitalism was unique in basing itself on the principle of gain, as expressed by the self-regulating market system. Polanyi’s argument is examined in the light of Ethiopian historical experience, with special reference to land and labour (including slavery), agricultural production, control over trade and prices, and traditional institutions which curtail or serve as an alternative to market factors. These include church holidays, compulsory hospitality, state banquets, alms giving, and, more generally, asceticism and resignation to the Will of God.

Ecocultural Control of Natural Energy Resources in Southern Ethiopia

Protection
Dealing with resource problems, energy balance and sustainable climate protection have emerged as subjects of public interest. Indigenous knowledge and concepts, however, are seldom dealt with by western scientists. On the basis of exemplary cases from south-western Ethiopia the interdependence of technical, social and symbolic knowledge and experiences is demonstrated, from which a model can be derived. With the help of the model it can be shown, how, under certain cultural conditions, through controlled mastery of vital resources, a symbiotic relationship between humans and their environment can be developed which does not endanger the particular habitat. The decisive factor in this case is an ethos that places man in a context of space and time which goes beyond his own lifetime and provides a link to past and future generations. Counterexamples show the fragile character of the presented system of relationships.

Reception
history of reception
Peasant writer
Émile Guillaumin tends to be forgotten today. This article examines the place he has been given in French and German literary history. Furthermore, the pedagogical reception of his works in Germany based on the very active network that made it possible will provide milestones for further research.

Léon Cordes (1913-1985) was steeped in a cultural heritage which, from Minerve to Argeliers, combined memories of the Cathars, the Crusade waged against them in the 13th century and the winegrowers' revolt of 1907. From the 1930s onwards, he took part in the emergence of a completely new Occitanism, alongside Charles Camproux, then Robert Lafont and Max Rouquette. As an writer of theater plays and an editor and a sensitive poet, he claimed to be a peasant with a visceral connection to his land, but mastered all the literary disciplines in order to use his creative work to defend and develop an Occitan language and civilisation that he passionately lived. This article, born of admiration and friendship, attempts to retrace the major stages of an under-recognised career, that of a peasant and writer whose deep roots went hand in hand with a deliberate openness to modernity.
