Ablaut System
de_DE
The verbal system of the East Gurage-Harari-Group inside the southern Ethio-Semitic languages, underwent a special development: The lengthening of the second consonant, the characteristic feature of B-type verbs in the other Semitic languages, totally got lost. The consequence was, that the palatal vowel, which we find already in the Gǝʿǝz imperfect yǝfeṣṣǝm, became the only characteristic of the B-type. It spread over all three verbal forms (perfect, imperfect, jussive) and formed a system of ablaut between ē and ī (and in analogy to that, between ō and ū in the D-type). This however, happened in different ways in the three languages: Silṭe, Harari und Zāy. The article tries to explain how the ablaut systems of the three languages came into being.

Countable common nouns in the East Gurage language Wolane are usually unmarked for number and belong to one of three noun classes based on the inherent gender feature of the nouns. First, it will be argued that morphological plural marking indicates plurality and specificity. Second, it will be shown that the interaction between the three noun classes and definiteness has various pragmatic effects. Finally, the findings for Wolane are compared with related East Gurage languages.

The close relationship between Harari and the East Gurage languages Silṭe, Wolane and Zāy was established already in 1931 by Marcel Cohen, and then confirmed by Wolf Leslau, Robert Hetzron and others. The present article will elaborate this relationship on the basis of the new material on the Eastern Gurage languages presented by Wolf Leslau, Ernst-August Gutt and Ronny Meyer in the last decades. Phonological, lexical, morphological and syntactical phenomena are considered in the course of which special emphasis is laid on the chronology of the separation of the different languages.

The collection of manuscripts preserved in the Oriental Manuscripts Department of the French Bibliothèque nationale contains documents about some thirty non-semitic languages spoken in Ethiopia which belong mainly to the d’Abbadie collection. Their exceptional age (they date back to the mid-19th century) gives them an incomparable historical value. I try in this short note to assess the use which has already been made of these documents by éthiopisants and to draw up the list of those which have not yet been used.

In the grammatical descriptions of Tigre it is usual to quote the 3rd masc. sg. and pl. and the 3rd fem. pl. with word-initial lǝ- (e.g. 3rd masc. sg. lǝqannǝṣ ‘he gets up’, Raz 1983) where it is generally remarked upon that there is an “optional use of prefixes in the imperfect”. In the light of older grammars and especially based on recent relevant analyses of modern Tigre texts, it is qannǝṣ which should be considered as the normal form, unless the conjunction ʾǝt precedes. The elision of elements other than lǝ- is rarely documented. Verbs with laryngeals show some peculiarities.

In Aethiopica 10 (2007) Gianfrancesco Lusini analysed and translated a passage from the new novel written in Tigre by Mohammad-Ali Ibrahim Mohammad. In very many cases I would prefer a different transcription and a different grammatical explanation, e.g. concerning the lengthening of consonants. Similarly the aʾa spelling of verbal forms in the A- and At-stems does not have its origin in the author’s “own convention” but it reflects an old orthographic and dialectal peculiarity.

The novel ʿƎmanini (“Trust me”) by Mohammed Ali Ibrahim Mohammed (born 1966) is the first work written in Tigre by a native speaker. This is a true literary and linguistic experiment, which will greatly enrich our knowledge of the Tǝgrāyǝt grammar and vocabulary, specifically its little known variant spoken among the Beni ʿAmǝr. Several phonetic, morphological, syntactical and lexical peculiarities of the text are here examined in order to reveal whether they are dictated by linguistic constraints (lexico-semantic, grammatical or pragmatic), or have been chosen by the author as stylistic devices for reasons of expressiveness. Passages of ʿƎmanini are here published, translated and commented.

it_IT
The present index considers all the proper names and noteworthy terms occurring in the feudal acts published in 1901 by C. Conti Rossini from the Golden Gospel of Dabra Libānos (Šemazānā, Akkala Guzāy, Eritrea). The index is intended as a simple working tool for all those (historians, philologists, linguists, etc.) who may be interested in retrieving informations preserved in the oldest ‘archival’ documentary source of Ethiopia and Eritrea. It preludes to a new edition of the feudal acts furnished with translation and commentary.

The Argobba of southeastern Wällo and northeastern Šäwa live amongst and speak the languages of the Amhara and the Oromo with great ease as if they are members of these ethnic groups. For them Amharic and Afaan Oromoo are the languages of administration and market transaction and therefore important for Argobba survival in a region domi-nated by these two ethno-linguistic groups. Yet the Argobba I met in these lands identified themselves as Argobba, and they were known as such, despite the fact that several of them had Amharic or Afaan Oromoo as their first language. The central claim of this article is therefore that the Argobba of this region define themselves as Argobba based on their traditions, customs, beliefs, values, and total cultural practices and not on the basis of who can or cannot speak the Argobba language.

The article compiles and analyses those historical narratives collected among the Sǝlṭe of southern-central Ethiopia, which deal with the migration of the later Sǝlṭe and their encounter with the original inhabitants of their new homeland. It correlates newly collected oral traditions (genealogies, local clan histories) and already published oral accounts with written sources. After a definition of the Sǝlṭe and their sub-units, the different traditional concepts of the original inhabitants (e.g., Žära, hagär säb, yafär säb, King Dawe) and the metamorphosis of these concepts are discussed. The claimed descent from aṣe Zärʾa Yaʿǝqob is identified as the dominant idea. The article points out how migration narratives and traditions on the establishment of the relations between original inhabitants and newcomers lay ideological fundaments of territorial claims as well as of identity, which still today are highly relevant.

One of the numerous manuscripts seen by C. Conti Rossini and copied for him deals with the monastery of Däbrä Kärbe, a religious community of Tigre. Some documents included in the Gospel of Däbrä Kärbe preserved traces of a correspondence between this community and the ‘aqqabe sä‘at of Ḥayq. This correspondence is very interesting from a historical point of view. It is accepted that the community of Ḥayq headed the monastic clergy in Ethiopia approximately until the XVIth century. But, it was not known how the ‘aqqabe sä‘at exercised control and authority over the monasteries, and what was his area of competence. These documents of Däbrä Kärbe give us a first answer to these questions.

In 1970 Maurice Taïeb, a prehistorian, a member of the French Mission (CNRS) in Ethiopia sent me the photos of an inscription in Arabic. Ibrāhīm’s cupola mentioned in the text is a heap of stones. If my reading is not erroneous Ibrāhīm wanted to go on a pilgrimage to sheikh Husayn of Bale. Walking from Addis Ababa he died in Addi Hiwot. According to the date of the foundation of Addis Ababa, 1887, and that of Mr. Taïeb’s letter, the text could be dated between 1888 and 1969–1970.

It has been common to compose short poems in relation to various memorable events or situations in the lives of Ethiopian rulers. A very few rulers also composed such poems themselves, TéwodrosII being one of them. The poems in this article cover the reigns from TéwodrosII to Hayle-SillaséI (with one brief omission: the rule of Tekle-Gïyorgïs, 1868–1872). Poems of ridicule and blame are as common as poems of praise. ATTENTION: Due to copy-right no online publication is provided.

Palatalisation
de_DE
Proceeding from a review of W. Leslau's work on Mäsqan some special cases of the verbal classes are reconsidered. E.g., the rare class qǝyä ‘(a)wait’ is explained as a four-radical verb containing two weak radicals r and *laryngeal. In the same way, verbs of the D-stem, which are characterized by an unalterable o, e.g. sommänä ‘to fast’, turn out to be four-radical verbs with w as their second radical. The most remarkable feature is the synchronous depalatalisation, which occurs e.g. in the negative perfect (an-tonna ‘he did not set himself down’) contrasting with the positive perfect (čonna) and in the imperfect contrasting with the jussive. This can be explained diachronically by palatalisation being a feature of the B-stem. Another kind of ‘depalatalisation’ occurs in the 3rd pers. plural forms of the perfect and the 3rd and 2nd pers. plural forms of the imperfect of the verbs III y, e.g. impf. yǝfäǧ ‘he completes’ but 3rd plur. yǝfäddo. This is seen as resulting from a morphological compensatory rule affecting in the plural forms not only the original plural ending -u but also the last root radical (i.e., y).

The fall in 1955 of Tsähafé Teʾezaz Wäldä-Giyorgis Wäldä-Yohannes was an event of special importance in the political history of imperial Ethiopia. For nearly a decade and a half after 1941, Wäldä-Giyorgis had exercised power and influence second only to that of Emperor Haylä-Sellasé. Yet, this very power and influence seems to have contributed to his undoing. Those who were shunted aside or feared his growing powers joined forces to estrange him from the emperor and bring about his downfall. The document printed here provides a personal account of the central character, Wäldä-Giyorgis himself, on the buildup to the final moment in May 1955, when he was removed from his powerful position to that of a provincial governor. It underscores the central role played in that downfall by his erstwhile ally, Mäkonnen Habtä-Wäld, as well as the attempt of Church authorities to mediate between the emperor and the powerful minister. Above all, the document gives us a rare insight into the relationship between emperor and minister and the trauma that the breach represented to both. Further, the outward decorum and civility that pervaded the entire proceedings of what must have been a grave political crisis provides a striking contrast to the brusqueness, not to say brutality, with which political opponents – real or imagined – were disposed of in post-1974 Ethiopia.

From Lǝbnä Dǝngǝl (1508–40) to Ǝgwalä Ṣǝyon / Gwalu (1801–18), most Solomonic monarchs in addition to their baptismal name also bore a regnal name (sǝmä mängǝśt) of the structure “noun + sägäd”. In Ethiopian Studies, sägäd of these names has traditionally been interpreted as an apocopated form of sägädä, ‘to prostrate oneself, to show submission’. In his 1988 edition of Die Geschichte des Lebna-Dengel, Claudius und Minās, however, Manfred Kropp challenged this view. Starting out by arguing that with names such as Bǝrhan Sägäd and Mäsiḥ Sägäd a traditionally understood sägäd would lead to inacceptable results, Kropp through a number of steps came to the conclusion that sägäd should best be seen as an adjective and be translated as ‘venerable’, an interpretation already once forwarded by Ludolf. The present article examines Kropp’s argument in detail, and concludes that it should be rejected. Conversely, it undertakes to demonstrate in a variety of ways, including the presentation of fresh evidence from Gǝʿǝz literature, that the traditional understanding of sägäd should – and can – be retained. In the process it also shows how this traditional understanding can be reconciled with names such as Bǝrhan Sägäd and, especially, Mäsiḥ Sägäd. In addition, the article proposes a new interpretation of the female regnal names formed with mogäsa in the position of male sägäd.

Starting from the reflexion on the legend of the Queen of Sheba’s hairy leg, the author tries to disentangle the inextricable network of traditions – Egyptian, Jewish, Byzantine and Arab – and to find an historical thread which may explain the many syncretic rehandlings that lead to the original redaction of Kebra Nagast, the «Glory of the Kings», the Ethiopian dynasty’s founding text. All this network of traditions seems to converge towards the gulf of Akaba and the Nubian border of the Red Sea.

The Function of Charter-Myths and Trickster-Tales in Ethiopia

Where there is no consensus between rulers and ruled about the extent of and limits to the use of power, rulers usually invent charters that give them divine rights to wield power at their own discretion. Most people are law-abiding citizens even under such conditions, but their sympathies lie with the few who dare to take the law into their own hands and free themselves from the constraints imposed by society as if social rules were inviolable. Such people are a law unto themselves, just like rulers who consider themselves to be above the law, but on a much smaller scale. Without checks on behaviour ‘from above’, lawlessness would flourish; but trickster-tales may hint that obedience to the law is not absolute, and that rebellion is a possibility if power is misused. Trickster-tales remind rulers to be moderate in their use of power. ATTENTION: Due to copy-right no online publication is provided.

As a member of the Deutsche Aksum-Expedition (1905/06) Dr. Erich Kaschke – while in Aksum in 1906 – produced a series of cylinder recordings which today are held in the Ethnologisches Museum (formerly: Museum für Völkerkunde) in Berlin. From Kaschke’s collection of “Abyssinian Phonogrammes” Song No. 5, which is here analyzed, represents a song of praise to the German Kaiser (Wilhelm II) due to whose decisive intervention the German Aksum Expedition was to become reality so quickly. In this Amharic song the German Kaiser is seen as the promise of the Fǝkkare Iyyäsus as well as participating in the line of David and Solomon, the father of Menelik I, the progenitor of the Ethiopian dynasty. In this way a connection with the then Ethiopian Emperor Menelik II was procured.

The 1994 Population and Housing Census of Ethiopia gathered considerable information of linguistic interest, notably the number of speakers of seventy-seven languages which it recognized. The Census’s list is largely consistent with lists of languages recognized in current research by Ethiopianist linguists. However, problems of two sorts arise in the Census list: dialects counted as languages and languages counted as dialects. Survey of research in Ethiopian linguistics supports instead the existence of seventy-three Ethiopian languages now spoken, a list of languages and their dialects which includes varieties of speech recognized and unrecognized by the Census.

An apotropaic Ethiopic inscription was found in the National Park of Ashkelon in 1998, near an absorbtion center for Ethiopian Jewish immigrants (also known as Betä Israʾel). Although the piece is clearly of Betä Israʾel origin, it incorporates symbolisms from Christian or pre-Christian sources, thus demonstrating the syncretic elements in Betä Israʾel religion. The reproduction of Ethiopic prayers of this sort is undoubtedly the last of its kind with the fastly changing religious practices of Betä Israʾel in Israel.

History
de_DE
The amount of different spellings for the Ethiopian month names originally borrowed from Coptic has always been confusing. On a closer look, they can be divided into two groups, whose differences exactly correspond to those between the Coptic dialects Sahidic and Bohairic. Thus, the nouns in question are not only of greatest value for our understanding of Coptic phonology – and through their etymological connections to Old Egyptian even for this very early stage of the language - , they show very clearly, how the successive borrowing of loanwords from changing linguistical environments works. The first Coptic month names were borrowed from the Saidic dialect, but when the patriarch’s see moved from Kairo to Alexandria, the corresponding words were borrowed again, this time from the northern Bohairic dialect. After the Coptic names had been borrowed in Arabic and the Coptic language itself came to be extinct, those words were borrowed a third time, their forms being now taken from Arabic. On the level of phonology, special attention should be given to the consonants, which have been reconstructed as being postglottalized in Old Egyptian, a proposal which is confirmed by the Ethiopian evidence.

‘Ancient features’ of Ethiopic in Aksumite inscriptions and ancient MSS must be discussed with consideration of the philological aspects implied, and their distribution may hint at the coexistence of parallel scribal traditions during Aksumite and early Post-Aksumite periods; from the 14th cent. onwards ‘ancient features’ tend to become much more sporadic and one traditional standard prevails; ancient MSS which did not observe the prevalent standard may have been systematically substituted; ‘lost traditions’ may survive in few scanty relics.

The texts of the first period of the Ethiopic literature, immediately translated from Greek, are among the finest of the geʿez production. They are also most difficult, due to the specificity of both languages. The Homily on the Trinity of Severian of Gabala is no doubt the most noteworthy and anduous one of this corpus. The French annotated translation given here tries to explain all the difficulties and obscurities, in respect only of the Ethiopic, of it.

Translation of a pre-modern Amharic commentary on the Nicene Creed in English. The text of a Commentary on the Nicene Creed (ṣälotä haymanot) which forms the subject of this paper appears at the end of a copy of the Psalter and Wǝddase Maryam belonging to the Ethiopian church at Däbrä Gännät in Jerusalem [MS JE 48 E = MS Dabra Gannat 186]. The text was copied and circulated privately by the late Roger Cowley, who also records that material similar in outline but different in detail is contained in the andǝmta-commentary on the Anaphora of the Nicene Fathers.

The account of the translation of the relics of abunä Täklä Haymanot, usually attached to his Acts, is one of the less-studied elements of the Saint’s hagiographic tradition. The article starts with a typology of translation reports in Ethiopian literature and deals in detail with the analysis of the textual tradition of the so-called Mäṣḥafä fǝlsätu lä-abunä Täklä Haymanot (‘Book of [the History] of the Translation [of the Body] of our father Täklä Haymanot’, BHT) and the problem of its sources. At least two stages can be distinguished in the development of the text (BHT1, BHT2), a long period of about two centuries separating them. The narrative of the first translation of the body of the Saint, which is said to have taken place in 1370, only becomes central in the later version of the work (BHT2). Among the literary relations around the BHT revealed in this study, the connection with the so-called Death of Moses, mostly known as a text affiliated to the literary tradition of the Betä Ǝsraʾel, is the most interesting one.

This short note is devoted to the interpretation of the passage of Gadla Libānos (whose critical edition and translation, together with that of the Miracles, is forthcoming) which assumedly attributes to the saint the translation of the Gospel of Matthew. To the contrary of the interpretation given in the book under press (due to editorial decision), it is maintained here that the passage records a different tradition, according to which Baqlā was the place where some particular sections only (Mt 5,1 ff. and 25,31 ff.), and not the whole Gospel of Matthew, were written. The sections of the Gospel are indicated in the passage under examination by their incipits (probably corresponding to their tituli), exactly as in a passage from the Miracles of Libānos. Some linguistic considerations on the value of the conjunction ʾama seem to confirm the hypothesis here advanced.

en_US
ዘሞትነ ንሕነ ወዘነገሥነ ንሕነ: The relative verb accompanied by its headnoun, forming a relative clause which functions as the equivalent of an adjective, is the normal construction in the Semitic languages. In Gǝʿǝz, however, it is the substantivized relative clause, in which the headnoun is missing, that is the most diversified in its function and probably statistically more frequent. These are the correlative clauses. They present some specific morpho-syntactic features; thus the feminine relative pronoun is not encountered in them and the number of the relative pronoun is consistently accorded with the putative headnoun. In the regular relative clauses the headnoun is a noun or an independent pronoun but also suffixed pronouns and whole sentences may be qualified by a relative clause. Nominal sentences are common as relative or correlative clauses. In case the predicate of the nominal clause is a substantive, a pronoun with copulative function is introduced preventing the confusion between the construction in question and a possessive complex with nota genetivi.

The interest of this short inscription in Geʿez lies in the curious (and unexplained) reason why such a version on the Congress of Vienna should have been composed in Ethiopic. The name of the alleged writer, Dr. Middeldorpf, is otherwise unknown in Ethiopian studies. ATTENTION: Due to copy-right no online publication is provided.

The Textual Background of the Gospel of Matthew in Ge‘ez

The Gospel of Matthew in Ge‘ez has been handed down in two ancient Versions: A-text and B-text. The A-text is the earlier one, translated from the Greek and completed not later than the 6th century. It is a very ‘free’ translation, adapting the text not only to a Semitic vernacular but also to a new cultural background. The Vorlage of the A-text was rather close to the Byzantine type of text, but it has more readings in common with Greek manuscripts such as ﬡ, W and B, than those commonly understood as ‘Byzantine.’ The B-text, although strongly influenced by the A-text, removes practically all translational liberties of the A-text. It contains readings that seem to have originated from Syriac or Coptic Gospels and therefore is probably a medieval revision of the A-text on the basis of Arabic Gospels. Existing European editions of the Gospel of Matthew by and large exhibit a B-text.
