A Megalithic Circle from Ǝmba Dǝrho: Some Significant Aspects of Culture

Ǝmba Dǝrho
Eritrea
The archeological evidence of megalithic stone circles at Ǝmba Dǝrho sheds some light on the development of prehistoric religion, with particular regard to death and burial. With the exception of slight changes from the prehistoric era, the material culture of megalithic burial at Ǝmba Dǝrho reflects the prehistoric tradition. It is thus direct proof of an historical continuum of prehistoric religion. An interesting aspect of the finds at Ǝmba Dǝrho concerns the evidence of cowry shells and teeth. The Eastern Cushitic speaking community – the Saho, who claim to have descended from the ʿAfar – trade cowry shells and are involved in certain smuggling activities on the coast with Saudi Arabia. It is therefore logical to assume that the builders of the megalithic circles at Ǝmba Dǝrho may also have been involved in similar activities. The type of pottery found at the burial site suggests it was used by an individual and associated with different routine activities during his lifetime. In Ǝmba Dǝrho two types of megalithic circles were found: single stone circles, and double stone circles (an inner circle within a larger circle); these may have been arranged by two different groups. Such differences, however, could also have been the result of the influence of micro-environmental variations within the same ecological zone. With regard to the ethnicity and origins of megalithic circles, there exists a general disagreement. A few hundred megalithic burial sites were excavated in India. Some scholars suggest they have Celtic or Scythian origins, and others suggest Iranian origins, but it is only a few that emphasize indigenous Dravidian origin on the basis of living megalithic traditions (Deo 1978: 451). With the discovery of megalithic stone circles in Eritrea and other parts of Africa, we now have new examples of indigenous origins reflected in living traditions. Karl Polanyi
The article considers Karl Polanyi’s thesis that 19th century Western capitalism was unique in basing itself on the principle of gain, as expressed by the self-regulating market system. Polanyi’s argument is examined in the light of Ethiopian historical experience, with special reference to land and labour (including slavery), agricultural production, control over trade and prices, and traditional institutions which curtail or serve as an alternative to market factors. These include church holidays, compulsory hospitality, state banquets, alms giving, and, more generally, asceticism and resignation to the Will of God.

Though Eduard Zander’s original sketchbook with drawings in pen and ink – showing the remote Simen Mountain area – is still preserved in London, his adventuresome life and his scientific and artistic work as a biologist, architect or artisan is scarcely known in 19th century Ethiopian history. In the present article the author makes an attempt at Zander’s biography, adding the missing links and correcting the errors of his few predecessors; furthermore, he tries to produce recently dicovered source-material in an updated form.

Innovation and Misoneism during the Reign of Emperor Yoḥannǝs IV (1872–1889)

The article attempts to examine the character and extent of innovation and misoneism during the reign of Yoḥannǝs, i.e. the period between the largely frustrated aspirations of Tewodros and of more substantial achievements of Mǝnilǝk. The study suggests that the reign of Yoḥannǝs in fact witnessed changes in many fields of life. These included improvements in communication between Ethiopia and the outside world; the advent of new imports; changes in land tenure and class relations; the strengthening of church land-holding; attempted action against slavery and the slave trade; increasing diffusion of fire-arms; the forced conversion of Muslims, and prohibition of foreign missionaries; the banning of tobacco; the depletion of wild-life; the introduction of a national flag, the appointment of a foreign consul abroad, and the building of a church in Jerusalem.

Skeuomorphism in Aksumite Pottery? Remarks on the Origins and Meanings of Some Ceramic Types
Manzo, Andrea

Asumite Times
This paper deals with the problem of the origins of some Aksumite ceramic types. The possibility that these types were originated by the imitation of shapes and decorations of imported Mediterranean metal and glass vessels is pointed out. Several cases supporting this hypothesis are proposed. Thus, Aksumite pottery can give us information about a class of imported luxury items absent in the archaeological record but present in the documentary sources, which did not escape the melting pot and re-use. As the use of metal vessels by the Aksumite elite might be linked to the adoption of Mediterranean elements in Aksumite pagan ideology, the imitation of metalware in less expensive media such as pottery suggests the adoption of this ideology by people of lower status. Moreover, the changes in ceramic styles in the mid-4th–mid-6th centuries A.D. can be related to the progressive adoption of Christianity.

The Silver Coins of the Aksumite King Meḥadeyos in the Light of the Chemical-Physical Analyses

Chemical Analysis
History
Aksum
Recently it was possible to examine a struck and a cast silver coin issued by the Aksumite king Mehadeyos (ca. 420/430 A.D.) typologically similar to the cast type Munro-Hay AR 1. The chemical-physical analyses carried out on these Aksumite coins – the cast specimen and the minted one – from a side show a substantial convergence with those realised by others, but they diverge for the aspect regarding their authenticity. In actual fact the minted coin is an obvious counterfeit because the chemical composition of the alloy contains silver (92/93%) in a percentage never attested in the contemporary Aksumite coinage whereas the cast specimen has been proved to be ancient and made of good silver and copper alloy (85%), typical of the Aksumite coinage in the 5th century A.D. Furthermore its microcrystalline structure and the concretions developed over hundreds of years eliminate all doubts about a hypothetical remelting of the coin in modern times. The Jesuit Patriarchate to the Preste: Between Religious Reform, Political Expansion and Colonial Adventure
Martínez D'Alòs-Moner, Andreu
Jesuit Mission
Portuguese Influence

History
Patriarchate
In this paper I analyse the reasons that lead Portugual to send a Jesuit Patriarch to Ethiopia. Such a mission represented a radical break from the tolerant attitude the Lusitans had been showing vis à vis this African Church; the embassies that for decades flowed between Ethiopia and Portugal were suddenly replaced by a one-way attempt of conversion that deeply affected Ethiopian Christian society for more than a century. This mission is placed at the crossroads of both a process of spiritualization that the Portuguese court, under the influence of the Jesuit fathers and the cardinal infantes, endured, and of the political stagnation of the Indian colonial project. But the Catholic Patriarchate would only come to the fore, I contend, at the outcome of the Bermudez affair. This episode, which has largely been underestimated by historiography, was crucial for pushing forward the King João III, the Pope and the Jesuits in the Patriarchal adventure.

The Impact of Dogali on the International Policy of the Central European Powers
Tafla, Bairu
Dogali
ʿAdwa
Battle of Adwa
Ethio-Italian Conflict
Colonialism
History
The victory of Dogali (1887) represents the first successful resistance to European colonialism in Northeast Africa, and as such its historical significance has been immense. For some obscure reason, however, it was neglected in Ethiopian historiography until the last quarter of the 20th century when it was popularized for academic and political purposes. Its impact in history was twofold: on the international level, it cracked the Triple Alliance which ʿAdwa, the historical culmination of Dogali, subsequently rendered ineffective for good. On the national or regional level, Dogali initiated a campaign for liberty and sovereignty which was to last for decades and in which ʿAdwa and Maycäw were to stand as landmarks. These landmarks were nonetheless fought deep in the heart of the country, and in this respect Dogali, which took place way out of the effective control of the Empire, is no doubt exemplary.

Ever since the ʿEzana inscriptions were published by the Deutsche Aksum Expedition in the beginning of the 20th century they have been looked upon as the most important document from Ethiopia of the 4th century A.D.Today, however, another stele has been discovered, which, having similar content — repeated in three languages: Pseudosabaic, Greek and Gǝʿǝz — is in a much better state. The text in its turn, though in many aspects identical, shows a row of distinct deviations from the DAE stele, which makes it necessary to critically compare the two texts. The fact, that the stone was originally placed in the middle of a grave site, as well as the palm frond and the monotheistic phrase “Lord of the Heaven” used in the text indicate that by that time the Aksumite court had been converted to Christianity.

The Crischona-missionaries encountered considerable difficulties in Ethiopia: slow communication with Europe, financial problems, complex processes of adaptation to or differentiation from Ethiopian culture and the missionary efforts within the Ethiopian Church. Ultimately, their enterprise was doomed to failure.

In traditional Ethiopian paintings a shining blue is observed. An analysis of four objects from the Museum Haus Völker und Kulturen in St. Augustin shows that they were painted with laundry blue. This substance is of varying composition, and has contained synthetic ultramarine since 1830. Laundry blue was of daily use and carried by travellers and missionaries. It was widely used by painters because of its shining colour and good technical properties. In this article the most likely paths by which synthetic ultramarine could have reached Ethiopia are described. This can be shown to have taken place several decades before 1900, the date that has been hitherto assumed to mark the introduction of synthetic colours. The German Zander was probably the first painter in Ethiopia to decorate a church (Därasge Maryam) with synthetic ultramarine in 1852.

The famous Robert Lebeck Collection of historical photographs, which has been preserved in the Agfa Foto-Historama in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum/ Museum Ludwig, Cologne, since 1994, contains an album entitled “Views of the Abyssinian Campaign – presented by Lord Napier of Magdala”. With its 78 albumen prints, taken by the photographers of the 10th Company, Royal Engineers–Great Britain, it seems to be a unique but scarcely known source for Ethiopian studies. To our present knowledge, they are the earliest photographic documents related to Ethiopia. In this article the author gives a detailed analysis of three prints (Nr.: 58, 59, 60) showing the released captives on whose behalf the “crusade” of the Magdala-expedition was undertaken in 1867/68, and makes an attempt to identify the persons on the photos. Many of these persons left an indelible impact on the 19th century Ethiopian history through their roles as counsellors, missionaries, scientists or artisans.

Ethiopia, Europe and Modernity: A Preliminary Sketch
Crummey, Donald
History
Modernity
Diplomacy
Relations Europe-Ethiopia
Epistemology
This paper explores some of the issues of cultural epistemology which underlie the relations between Ethiopia and Europe. It briefly explores the origins of modern diplomatic contacts, arguing that the appropriation of modernity increasingly became a central concern of Ethiopia’s rulers in their relations with Europe. It then raises the question, if Europeanized modernity has increasingly marked Ethiopia in the twentieth century, how are we to discern Ethiopia’s contribution to this process? To what extent, in its modernization, has Ethiopia’s educated elite lost contact with an indigenous point of view? The paper argues that a critical appreciation of modernity in Ethiopia must be made against a background which historicizes the process whereby it came about, which takes fully into account the modes of reasoning embodied in Gǝʿǝz texts, and which privileges the views of those rural Ethiopians so lightly touched by modernity.

Ethiopian Dynastic Marriage and the Bétä Esra'él

Significant contacts between the Ethiopian State and the Bétä Esraʾél began in the late sixteenth century with the move of the imperial capital to the Lake Ṭana area, which was relatively near to Fälaša settlements in or around the Sämén mountains. At about this time Ḥarägo, an apparently high-born Fälaša woman, supposedly the sister of Gedéwon, the Bétä Esraʾél ruler of Sämén, and reportedly a recent convert to Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, became the consort, or as the Jesuits preferred to say a “concubine” of the redoubtable Emperor Särṣä Dengel. She bore him four sons. One, Zä-Maryam, was chosen as heir to the throne, but died before he could succeed. The second, Yaʿqob, actually ascended the imperial throne, but was too young to make any significant achievement. Two others, Keflä Maryam, and Mätäko, threw in their lot with their kinsman Gedéwon, and thus played a notable role in imperial and/or Fälaša local politics. There is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that Ethiopian Christians regarded Ḥarägo, or her children, as in any way different from the rest of the royal family, or that they were in any way discriminated against on account of their non-Christian, or Bétä Esraʾél, origin. The idea of a dynastic alliance with the Bétä Esraʾél was subsequently revived by Emperor Susneyos’s rebel brother Ras Yämanä Krestos. He proposed giving his daughter, the Emperor’s niece, to the Sämén ruler Gedéwon’s son and heir Walay. Ras Yämanä Krestos’ rebellion was, however, crushed, after which Susneyos exiled his brother to Gojjam, and forbade the proposed Bétä Esraʾél dynastic alliance. As a Roman Catholic, seeking military support from the Portuguese, and an adherent of the Jesuits, who wished to cleanse Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity of “Judaic” elements, he would moreover have been predisposed against playing the Fälaša card. The subsequent decline of Bétä Esraʾél power, the disappearance of the Fälaša ruling dynasty, and the growing importance of fire-arms, which the Fälaša lacked, created a new strategic and political climate in which dynastic alliances between the Ethiopian monarchy and the Bétä Esraʾél no longer had any place.

Although there is no conclusive proof that the fall of Jerusalem in 1187 was not the main reason for hewing the churches at Lalibäla out of the rocks, there seem to be enough indications that the incentive for the enterprise is to be looked for in the internal politics in Ethiopia at the turn of the XIIIth century. The fact that the relations with the most important Muslim power of the time were rather friendly, in any case not hostile, may corroborate this view.ATTENTION: Due to copy-right no online publication is provided.

Up to now eight fragmentary Ethiopic inscriptions have been discovered in South Arabia, dating from the time immediately after the year 525 A.D. when the Yemen was conquered by the Abyssinians. Three of these fragments, among them a hitherto unpublished text, were found in the Himyarite capital Ẓafār and are parts of reports of the deeds of the Ethiopian King Kāleb. The scanty informations which can be gained from these fragmentary Ethiopic inscriptions share common features with events which are known from other contemporary epigraphic documents and from hagiographic sources in various languages.

Situated in the interdisciplinary fields of historiography and linguistics, this article evaluates oral history interviews as a resource valuable to both disciplines. The case study analyses the language of remembering in Italian and French life story interviews from the archive Forced Labour 1939-1945 and the LangAge corpus. In five working steps, it implements the oral history approach of developing hypotheses from the data itself with methods from corpus linguistics. Occurrences of personal pronouns we and I are compared and keywords as well as frequent word combinations (n-grams) are identified. These quantitative approaches are complemented by exemplary analyses of frequent phrases such as ‘I remember’ or ‘at a certain moment’. In doing so, the biographical approach of oral history and historical contextual knowledge can be combined with the results of corpus linguistic analysis. Although different transcription standards of oral history and linguistics prove to be problematic, in the future the new research environment Oral-History.Digital will simultaneously support cross-collection and close-to-source analyses of life history interviews.
