Ethiopia 1885 in Reclus’s Nouvelle Géographie Universelle
Gascon, Alain
Institut français de géopolitique Université Paris 8, Centre d’Études Africaines (ÉHÉSS/CNRS), Chargé de cours à l’INALCO
In volume x of the Nouvelle Géographie Universelle published in 1885 Reclus dealt at length with Ethiopia. Although he never visisted Africa he wrote the first relevant geographical analysis of this region. He did not only list the descriptions and ideas prevalent at the end of the xixth century but he was the first to predict the rise of Šäwa which Mǝnilǝk was later to lead into the conquest of the Southern Highlands.

The Silver Coins of the Aksumite King Meḥadeyos in the Light of the Chemical-Physical Analyses
Pedroni, Luigi
Devoto, Guidi
Recently it was possible to examine a struck and a cast silver coin issued by the Aksumite king Mehadeyos (ca. 420/430 A.D.) typologically similar to the cast type Munro-Hay AR 1. The chemical-physical analyses carried out on these Aksumite coins – the cast specimen and the minted one – from a side show a substantial convergence with those realised by others, but they diverge for the aspect regarding their authenticity. In actual fact the minted coin is an obvious counterfeit because the chemical composition of the alloy contains silver (92/93%) in a percentage never attested in the contemporary Aksumite coinage whereas the cast specimen has been proved to be ancient and made of good silver and copper alloy (85%), typical of the Aksumite coinage in the 5th century A.D. Furthermore its microcrystalline structure and the concretions developed over hundreds of years eliminate all doubts about a hypothetical remelting of the coin in modern times.

Ecocultural Control of Natural Energy Resources in Southern Ethiopia
Amborn, Hermann
Dealing with resource problems, energy balance and sustainable climate protection have emerged as subjects of public interest. Indigenous knowledge and concepts, however, are seldom dealt with by western scientists. On the basis of exemplary cases from south-western Ethiopia the interdependence of technical, social and symbolic knowledge and experiences is demonstrated, from which a model can be derived. With the help of the model it can be shown, how, under certain cultural conditions, through controlled mastery of vital resources, a symbiotic relationship between humans and their environment can be developed which does not endanger the particular habitat. The decisive factor in this case is an ethos that places man in a context of space and time which goes beyond his own lifetime and provides a link to past and future generations. Counterexamples show the fragile character of the presented system of relationships.
