Ethiopia and the Great Transformation
Pankhurst, Richard
The article considers Karl Polanyi’s thesis that 19th century Western capitalism was unique in basing itself on the principle of gain, as expressed by the self-regulating market system. Polanyi’s argument is examined in the light of Ethiopian historical experience, with special reference to land and labour (including slavery), agricultural production, control over trade and prices, and traditional institutions which curtail or serve as an alternative to market factors. These include church holidays, compulsory hospitality, state banquets, alms giving, and, more generally, asceticism and resignation to the Will of God.

Innovation and Misoneism during the Reign of Emperor Yoḥannǝs IV (1872–1889)
Pankhurst, Richard
The article attempts to examine the character and extent of innovation and misoneism during the reign of Yoḥannǝs, i.e. the period between the largely frustrated aspirations of Tewodros and of more substantial achievements of Mǝnilǝk. The study suggests that the reign of Yoḥannǝs in fact witnessed changes in many fields of life. These included improvements in communication between Ethiopia and the outside world; the advent of new imports; changes in land tenure and class relations; the strengthening of church land-holding; attempted action against slavery and the slave trade; increasing diffusion of fire-arms; the forced conversion of Muslims, and prohibition of foreign missionaries; the banning of tobacco; the depletion of wild-life; the introduction of a national flag, the appointment of a foreign consul abroad, and the building of a church in Jerusalem.

The Silver Coins of the Aksumite King Meḥadeyos in the Light of the Chemical-Physical Analyses
Pedroni, Luigi
Devoto, Guidi
Recently it was possible to examine a struck and a cast silver coin issued by the Aksumite king Mehadeyos (ca. 420/430 A.D.) typologically similar to the cast type Munro-Hay AR 1. The chemical-physical analyses carried out on these Aksumite coins – the cast specimen and the minted one – from a side show a substantial convergence with those realised by others, but they diverge for the aspect regarding their authenticity. In actual fact the minted coin is an obvious counterfeit because the chemical composition of the alloy contains silver (92/93%) in a percentage never attested in the contemporary Aksumite coinage whereas the cast specimen has been proved to be ancient and made of good silver and copper alloy (85%), typical of the Aksumite coinage in the 5th century A.D. Furthermore its microcrystalline structure and the concretions developed over hundreds of years eliminate all doubts about a hypothetical remelting of the coin in modern times.

The Socio-Economic Role and Status of Handicraftsmen among the Kambaata of Southern Ethiopia
Abbute, Wolde-Selassie
Although traditional handicraftsmen play an indispensable economic and socio-cultural role within the society, they have been marginalized and segregated by the peasant population in southern Ethiopia. The handicraftsmen produce a wide range of production, household consumption and defence tools and implements. Besides, they have an important socio-cultural role as ritual performers, initiators, drummers, musicians, entertainers, operators, professional mourners, traditional medical experts, etc. during several social life events. However, despite their important role in multiple contexts, they are despised and prejudiced against by the peasant population. They are kept away and segregated from the rest of the society, being considered as unclean, and restricted in many ways, including limitation to endogamous marriage.
This study examines the ambiguous and ambivalent position of the handicraftsmen, as well as their mutual interdependence within the peasant population by investigating the particular case of potters and smiths among the Kambaata of southern Ethiopia.

Wie wandeln? Logiken gegenwärtiger Nachhaltigkeitsbemühungen
Acksel, Britta

“Classical” liberalism in France, from the middle of the 19th century to World War I
Andriot, Antonin
Université Clermont Auvergne https://orcid.org/0009-0009-7494-8981
Why did “classical” liberalism – during its European golden age in the mid-19th century – never give birth, in France, to a political movement which could be influent enough to carry its whole society project? The environments of political economy, which were the authentic representatives of this wave, seemed to have had a hard time finding their place within a contentious context inherited from the French Revolution, but also fully investing in the game of democracy. As the defenders of free trade and limited state power, liberals also faced the increasing difficulty to see their ideas being questioned at the turn of the 20th century. It is thus necessary to go back to the very definition of French “classical” liberals, in order to better highlight their ambitions, their failures and their inherent practices, and better understand what constitute for them, and in many ways, their own identity.
