The manuscript is dated. At first glance it seems to be the standard Psalter. But there are several criteria, which give insight into the manuscript culture, and which has not changed during centuries. The modern printed editions of a Mäzmurä Dawit exactly follow the scheme of the long tradition. Besides being a perfect witness to the traditional manuscript culture and individual use of a Mäzmurä Dawit, the Tübingen manuscript contains elements, which open the window to different aspects, as for example, worship and belief, iconography, or history.

Eine weitere arabische Inschrift von der osttigrayischen Handelsroute: Hinweis auf eine muslimische Kultstätte in der "dunklen Periode"?

This article discusses a fragmented Arabic inscription, which is kept in the rock-hewn church of Č̣ärqos Wǝq̠ro in eastern Tǝgray. The text could be read as one of the 99 names of God or an invocation of God. A stylistic comparison with Arabic inscriptions of eastern Tǝgray, Dahlak and other areas suggests that it was not produced locally, but rather imported, and dates to the 9th to 10th century approximately. It is thus one of the earliest witnesses for the presence of Muslims in Tǝgray in the “dark period” after the decline of Aksum. Style and content show that the inscription did not belong to a funeral complex, but rather to a place of worship. Its location points to a connection with nearby Nägaš, where Muslims revere the holy grave of the naǧāšī of the Ḥadīṯ, and which is located on the same route as Wǝq̠ro connecting the area with the Red Sea.

Some of these retreats of Sufi Muslims have a ‘monastic’ character, and allow males and females a life of reflection and devotion to God. An obvious parallel with Christian monasteries presents itself, referring to a partly shared religious culture. Some reflections on the extent and nature of this similarity are made, and the need for a fresh approach to the study of religion in Ethiopia/Africa, in the context of contemporary debates about religious identity and the hardening of communal boundaries, is underlined.

The position of this subject in the curricula of traditional Islamic education in Ethiopia is shortly described from both a diachronic and a synchronic perspective. The biography of the two learned men is analyzed with a special emphasis on the different phases of their training and on the literary outcomes of their activity. After early input from Syria-Palestine, the Ethiopian basilicas took on an Aksumite character. The article aims at giving some information about Ethiopian Muslim scholars of the past century, so to enhance our general knowledge of Ethiopian Islam, and, moreover, to contribute to a better prosopographical understanding of the Muslim presence in
Ethiopia. In this endeavour, it explores the data scattered in Ethiopian Islamic periodical press, which flourished in that country after the fall of the Derg regime in 1991. In
particular, the monthly magazine Bilal, which contains in almost every issue a biographical note devoted to some learned man of the recent past, is used to collect material on the scholars. Biographical articles in Amharic and Arabic which appeared in the magazine are summarized and commented upon.

Maḫbär
Sänbäte
Faithful of the Ethiopian Orthodox Täwaḥǝdo Church gather sometimes into a religious association. We can distinguish two types of religious associations: the maḫbär and the sänbäte. These two types are organized on the same scheme and are led by the faithful themselves. Both are based on a fundamental concept, which is to gather faithful around a banquet for a commemoration. Maḫbär and sänbäte are a representation of a zǝkǝr, a crucial concept in the Ethiopian Christianity. The religious authority is shared by one priest who leads the liturgy of the ritual. The presence of a priest without an organizational role highlights the influence of the laymen to organize their own religious life outwards the cast-iron ecclesiastical organisation. The social and religious influence of these organizations is very important in towns and in the countryside. To be member of these associations is a sign of an important social status in the parish community and the reality of both maḫbär and sänbäte shows the existence of a way of dialogue
between the Church and the faithful.

Latin medieval parallels to the malkʾa Maryam were reported in a previous paper. Since, a french scholar issued a study about Mary’s place in the medieval liturgy and her physical presence in the liturgical symbolic. So the latin texts in question are replaced in a whole. The possibility of a continuation until the Renaissance is explored. In the baroque ages we find in France a marial association from bavarian origin, internationally represented whose devotions are alike that inspiring the malkʾa Maryam. A further research is necessary about this parallel development of piety in Europe and Ethiopia.

The miracle of the light expanded by the saint’s fingers during the prayer is listed from a few ethiopic lives.
A few comments are given about Marrassini’s edition from the Gädlä Gäbrä Mänfäs Qeddus, especially the names of the saint’s fathers. Two toponyms of the same Gädl are examined and an alternative reading of the considered sentence is suggested.

The account of the translation of the relics of abunä Täklä Haymanot, usually attached to his Acts, is one of the less-studied elements of the Saint’s hagiographic tradition. The article starts with a typology of translation reports in Ethiopian literature and deals in detail with the analysis of the textual tradition of the so-called Mäṣḥafä fǝlsätu lä-abunä Täklä Haymanot (‘Book of [the History] of the Translation [of the Body] of our father Täklä Haymanot’, BHT) and the problem of its sources. At least two stages can be distinguished in the development of the text (BHT1, BHT2), a long period of about two centuries separating them. The narrative of the first translation of the body of the Saint, which is said to have taken place in 1370, only becomes central in the later version of the work (BHT2). Among the literary relations around the BHT revealed in this study, the connection with the so-called Death of Moses, mostly known as a text affiliated to the literary tradition of the Betä Ǝsraʾel, is the most interesting one.

The Crischona-missionaries encountered considerable difficulties in Ethiopia: slow communication with Europe, financial problems, complex processes of adaptation to or differentiation from Ethiopian culture and the missionary efforts within the Ethiopian Church. Ultimately, their enterprise was doomed to failure.

Yaʿqob of Sǝrug, one of the most important Syrian church writers of the 6th century, wrote more than 750 metrical works. Many of them are translated into Arabic, and this version was the Vorlage for the Ethiopian translator. About 20 of Yaʿqob’s homilies are representes in the the Ethiopic tradition, and most of them deal with christological-mariological themes. The Dǝrsan for the fourth Sunday of Taḫśaś is edited and translatedd on the basis of six Gǝʿǝz manuscripts. The contents concern the annunciation of the incarnation to the Virgin Mary.

Starting with the biblical Gǝyon (= the Gǝʿǝz name for the Nile) the river Nile plays an important role in Ethiopian perception.

The corpus of the miracles of Mary [Täʾamrä Maryam] particularly during the reign of emperor Zärʾa Yaʿǝqob (1434-68 A.D.) was enlarged with stories reflecting a local background and Ethiopian history. And suddenly in the 19th century the ‘idea of diverting the Nile’ which since early times was a challenging topic in the relationship between Egypt and Ethiopia, again turned up in a miracle of the Virgin Mary, referring to the time of the Crusaders and the resulting diplomatic activities. This article wants to evaluate how far the Ethiopians regard themselves as masters of the Nile waters and to what extent they derive their legitimacy from divine sources.

The paper traces various extra–biblical strains of tradition concerning the Magi (MT 2,1–12) in Geʿez literature. The Magi (mäsäggǝlan, säbʾa sägäl) are present in various Ethiopic compositions, both translated from other languages and original. The compositions discussed include inter alia apocryphal literature (The life of Adam and Eve, The Miracles of Jesus, The Book of the Birth of Mary, The Miracles of Mary), homiliaries (that for the feasts of Mary, and that for the feasts of the Archangel Raguel), and two commentaries on the Gospel.

The tradition, as seen in the texts reviewed, is not consistent, and various stories, sometimes contradicting each other, are told about the Magi. Those strains of tradition which are not of local origin (as are the names of the Magi), come from a number of external sources with roots in early Christian literature. Some elements of this tradition (the Virgin with the Child visible in the star, the origin of the gifts from the Cave of Treasures, Zärädäšt as the ancestor of the Magi, and many thousand men forming their retinue) can be traced back to Syriac apocryphal and exegetical literature.

The philological examination of the genealogical tree of the “Miracles” of Gabra Manfas Qeddus, based of course on the principle of conjunctive errors and not on that of marginal similarities, has shown two important phenomena: 1. that not just one, but at least six different stemmas (for miracles I, II‑VII, VIII, IX, X‑XIII) can be identified; and 2. that none of these stemmas has the slightest relationship with those already identified for the “Life”. This involves an important historical consequence, because it demonstrates the profound difference, which has always been supposed in hagiography, between the redaction of the “Life” and that of the “Miracles” of the same saint.

Canon Lists

The canon lists in Sēnodos und Fetḥa nagaśt do not represent the original arrangement of biblical books, since they go back to coptic traditions. Most of the biblical manuscripts are younger than the lists (c. 14 to c. 20), and their order of books is very disparat. Although the original arrangement cannot be identified from them, they reveal aspects of arrangement, which generate a specific ethiopian shape of the bible. Books or groups of books are bound together in different ways. In the OT there are eight books of the Law instead of five, and the rest remains in great variance. In the NT the internal order of the groups is stable, but the arrangement of the groups varies. Looking at this variability from a perspective of reception, the manuscripts are important, for they show what the believing community actually had before it. The ethiopian biblical canon seems to be construed as a net of various innerbiblical dialogues.

Sylvain Grébaut (1881–1955) devoted his life to Ethiopian studies. He collected Ethiopic Mss. for the Vatican Library, taught Ethiopic at the Catholic University of Paris, described a considerable number of Mss., edited and translated religious texts, and accumulated day by day a variety of lexical information, in order to complete Dillmann’s Lexicon.

This made him realise the usefulness of a scholarly journal to preserve all this knowledge. He attained only partial success, with great effort and labour. This article contains parts of the gadl of Sylvain Grébaut, which reminds one of the story of S. Yared and the caterpillar.

Ethiopic literary tradition numbers hagiographical and magical texts centred on the legendary figure of St. Cyprian the magician, but no Ethiopic version of St. Cyprian’s (bishop of Carthage, † 258 A.D.) works has so far been registered in the current literature. This contribution is devoted to the edition, translation, and philological analysis of the only authentically cyprianic text preserved in Ethiopic: Epistula 70. This «synodal epistle» (254 or 255 A.D.) originates from 3rd century baptismal controversies: Cyprian maintains that it is necessary that all who come from heresy must receive full baptism. Besides the Latin original text, Epistula 70 is preserved in a Greek translation (inserted in Zonara’s and Balsamon’s canonical collections), but no oriental version exists, except for the Ethiopic one. Epistula 70 is preserved in 5 mss. of the Ethiopic Sēnodos: EMML 1843, ff. 58rb–60rb; EMML 2430, ff. 42rc–43rb; BN Zotenberg 121 [Éth. 95], ff. 78va–79va; BAV, Borgiano etiopico 2, ff. 173rb–174vb; Uppsala, University library, O Etiop. 39, ff. 121ra–122rc; the 5 mss. can be classified according to a clear stemma codicum and all of them have been used in the present edition. J.M. Wansleben identified Epistula 70 in 1671, but his discovery has remained neglected till now. Concerning the Vorlage of the Ethiopic translation, there are some clues to a direct dependence on a Greek version, which could be older than that preserved in the byzantine canonical collections.

The aim of the paper is to provide an overview of little known Gǝʿǝz texts ascribed to Philo, namely: fragments of a Paschal Homily, a bulky but incomplete commentary on the Pauline Corpus and a fragment of Philo of Carpasia’s commentary on the Canticle of Canticles. While concentrating mainly on the latter, the present article wants to draw attention to linguistic characteristics common to the trilogy which is associated with the name Philo. The Gǝʿǝz version of Philo of Carpasia’s Commentary is a rare example of a strictly paratactic translation which is keen to reproduce literally the Greek text from which it depended. The outcome is a hardly understandable Gǝʿǝz text which is however interesting as a unique witness of an ancient translation technique. The Philonian trilogy is among other aspects, a mine of unknown or little attested Gǝʿǝz terms.

The article deals with a peculiar document that was found during a field research conducted by the team of the Ethio-SPARE project during the spring 2010 in church libraries of Gulo Mäkäda wäräda, north-east Təgray (historical ʿAgame). This document is a Gəʿəz text written during the 19th century and dedicated to the refutation of the Catholic doctrine. Because of its apparent historical significance, the text and its translation are presented here. Taking into consideration the literary form (discourse) of the work and the place where it was found (the area of the active Catholic preaching) we can assume that the text is a summary of the anti-Catholic argumentation, possibly used by the Orthodox priests, and a witness of the local attitude to the Catholic missionary activities. The treatise does not provide any hints to the political issues of the Catholic settlement in Ethiopia. However, it does highlight some elements of the discourse against Catholic faith in the context of the emergence of a strong religious Täwaḥǝәdo identity.

The Apocryphal Legitimation of a “Solomonic” Dynasty in the Kǝbrä nägäśt – A Reappraisal

The present study constitutes an attempt to reevaluate the ideological function of the Kǝbrä nägäśt as an apocryphal production extolling the nobility and orthodoxy of early 14th-century “Solomonic” élites. In this regard, the Kǝbrä nägäśt can be considered as the Ethiopian response to the religious and political propaganda of the Syriac Apocalypse of Pseudo-Methodius and related literature. The arguments recently made in favour of a 6th-century date for an hypothetical original kernel of the Kǝbrä nägäśt are also reexamined and reinterpreted. The mention of the “glory of David” in the inscription RIÉ 195 II: 24 is not a reference to the Davidic/Solomonic origins of the kings of Aksum but part of a biblical citation, Isaiah 22:22–23, here for the first time correctly identified, while the connection between the recently published MḤDYS’s gold coin and the council of Chalcedon is too speculative and aleatory to be of any use. The glorious memories of 6th-century Ḥimyaritic wars provided but the point of departure for the elaboration of the traditions to be much later creatively recycled in the Kǝbrä nägäśt.

Religious Controversy
Two gädls, briefly examined in this study, portray Iyasu I as a Ṣägga Lǝǧ partisan. Ṣägga Lǝǧ is one of two views dismissed as heresy at the 1878 Boru Meda synod. This synod settled the Christological controversy that beset the Ethiopian Church for two and a half centuries, by declaring Karra, the polemical name for Täwaḥǝdo, as official orthodoxy. What is strange about the accounts of the two gädls is that they seem to contradict one
of the doxas of Ethiopian historiography, which is that Iyasu I was a diehard Täwaḥǝdo. This study resolves this enigma by showing that during the Gondärine period the Täwaḥǝdo teaching, which enjoyed the recognition of the royal centre as orthodoxy, was Ṣägga Lǝǧ. Such revision of the historiography of the doctrinal controversy in turn paves the way for a better understanding of the rebellion of Lasta and southern Tǝgray, against the monarchial centre of Gondärine Ethiopia. So far, the history of this rebellion
is poorly understood due to the wrong assumption that the Karra teaching championed by the Lasta–Tǝgray group at the time was the same Täwaḥǝdo of the monarchial centre. No historian could thus entertain the possibility of a long lasting rebellion in the name of Karra. This study shows that throughout much of the Gondarine period, Karra was rather the doctrine of a third party that defied the centre using Lasta and southern
Tǝgray as safe-heavens.

The labour and sacrifices of the members of the Swedish Evangelical Mission and their predecessors in the production of scriptural works in Eritrea, and partly in Ethiopia, are praiseworthy. More acclaim is owed to these workers for their educating and/or involving native workers in the arduous task that often spanned two or three generations. When it comes to taking credit for these works, however, the native workers were rarely mentioned or, if they are mentioned, their contributions were not given the deserved recognition. This article attempts to highlight the remarkable contributions of native workers in the translation, or completion of the translation, of the Bible into four languages in Eritrea in contradistinction with the often exaggerated contributions of foreign missionaries in that successful mission.

The five churches of Yǝmrǝḥannä Krǝstos, Ǝmäkina Mädḫane ʿAläm, Ǝmäkina Lǝdätä Maryam, Walye Iyäsus and Žämmädu Maryam are all built in caves in the massif of Abunä Yosef, situated in the Lasta region of Wollo. Changes in their architectural forms suggest that they were constructed over a period of several hundred years in the order listed and as such represent a significant chronological model against which many of Ethiopia’s rock-hewn churches may be compared. Until the publication of this paper, it has been universally accepted that the church of Yǝmrǝḥannä Krǝstos was built in the second half of the 12th century under the sponsorship of an eponymous king. Aspects of the church’s architecture, namely the absence of a raised space reserved for the priesthood before the triumphal arch (the bema), of any sign of a chancel barrier around it, of western service rooms, of a vestibule and narthex, and of the presence of a reading platform (representative of the Coptic ambo), of a full-width open western bay (allowing for a ‘return aisle’), and of arches carrying the aisle ceilings, all point to a date of construction around the mid-13th century. In fact, the closest parallels to Yǝmrǝḥannä Krǝstos may be found in Lalibäla’s second group of monolithic churches, Amanuʾel and Libanos. Closely associated also is the church of Gännätä Maryam. A painting of the Maiestas Domini in the south-east side room (pastophorion) of the latter suggests that the room served as an extension of the sanctuary. By the end of the 13th century, as witnessed by Ǝmäkina Mädḫane ʿAläm and the other churches built in caves, the full-width sanctuary becomes a characteristic which endures throughout 14th- and 15th -century Ethiopian church architecture. Yǝmrǝḥannä Krǝstos and Gännätä Maryam stand on the cusp of a major liturgical change which coincides with the transfer of royal power from the Zagwe dynasty to their Solomonic successors, who sought legitimacy by following Coptic practices.

Traditional Medicine and Magic According to Some Ethiopian Manuscripts from European Collections

The present paper is dealing exclusively with medico-magical texts and traditions from a Christian Ethiopian environment. The handbooks and collections of various traditional healers in Ethiopia have played a significant role in the chain of transmission of medical and magical knowledge. This paper will focus on the structure and composition strategy exemplified by four Ethiopian manuscripts (MS Or. 11390 from the British Library, MS Éthiopien 402, 402 and 648 from the Bibliothèque nationale Paris). The analysis shows how the specialist knowledge was transmitted, preserved and reused. Moreover, it sheds some light on the protagonists of this transfer.

The Term ʿālam in 1 Enoch

In 1 Enoch, the term ʿālam offers various meanings, most of which are temporal. It qualifies God as well as heaven. It also expresses the type of angelic life in heaven. With regard to life on earth, ʿālam signifies the most distant past and the most distant future. It also refers to things that will have a long duration, yet not without limit, like the suffering of fallen angels. In contrast human suffering on earth is never associated with an eternal one.

The growth of a myth of ancient origins pertaining to the church and monastery of Märṭulä Maryam and the exploration of its content and context form the central focus of this study. Material related to the church’s apparent ancient origin provides appropriate data through which to illustrate at once the themes of historical fragility and resilience. Märṭulä Maryam consolidated its mythical history by suppressing the memory of its actual founder, thus altering the tradition of the church itself. This study will demonstrate that efforts to completely erase the memory of Märṭulä Maryam’s founder and its original history were wholly in vain. Such acts of suppression inevitably leave indelible traces of the true past, not to mention the fact that its actual history is well secured within the records of other Ethiopian churches, as well as in those of Märṭulä Maryam itself.
