Mathias J. Hammer is a PhD student in history at the College of Asia and the Pacific, Australian National University, Canberra (since 2008). He studied history at the University of Graz, Austria (MA) from 2000 to 2005 and was awarded the “Dharmasiswa” Scholarship of the Indonesian Government to study Indonesian culture and language at Gaja Mada University, Indonesia from 2006 to 2007. His PhD thesis focuses on the killings in Klaten from 1965 to 1968 and on the local historical background which caused the high amount of violence in this part of Indonesia.
